CALEXICO, Calif. — The City of Calexico is pursuing state funding to strengthen emergency preparedness by adding a community resilience center and emergency shelter to its proposed Heber Park project.

In an official public outreach notice, the city said it was preparing an application to the California Community Resilience Centers Program and wanted to hear which services residents would most value. The notice specifically states that funding had not yet been awarded.

What might a resilience center do?

Depending on approved funding and eventual design, a community resilience center may provide space for people to seek support during extreme heat, severe weather or other disruptions. It might also offer community programming outside emergencies. These are possible functions, not confirmed operating services at Heber Park.

How residents were consulted

The city announced community meetings in September at Carmen Estrada Park, the Calexico Public Library, Fire Station No. 2 and Calexico Community Center. English and Spanish interpretation was offered. Because the dates have passed, the earlier notice is not an invitation to a future September meeting.

Questions for the next stage

Residents can ask whether an application has been submitted, whether the state has approved a grant, where the shelter would be located and which agency would maintain it. Without award documents, a construction contract or a scheduled opening, the proposal should be described as under development.
