Calexico Invited Local Artists to Design Murals for Four Park Restroom Buildings

CALEXICO, Calif. — Public art was again part of the city’s park improvement efforts this fall, with a call for artists to design murals for four park restroom buildings.

The City of Calexico Recreation Department announced Community Mural Project — Cycle 9 and invited artists to submit work celebrating the community and transforming ordinary public facilities into more welcoming places. The program description includes artist stipends and reimbursement of eligible installation expenses.

What was the submission deadline?

According to the city’s public notice, proposals were due on Monday, October 26, 2026, at 5 p.m. That deadline has already passed. This report is not a new call for late submissions or a guarantee that late proposals will be accepted.

Has an artist been chosen?

The notice establishes that a competition was opened; it does not identify the eventual selected artists, a final jury decision or the date on which every mural will appear. The city separately references project guidelines and the Recreation Department for updates.

Why this is community news

Publicly accessible murals can give local artists opportunities to show their work and make neighborhood facilities feel more connected to residents. The value of a public-art program also depends on how artists are compensated and whether murals are maintained after installation.

Residents who want to follow the program can check the project information and ask the city for the artist selection and completed-work schedule.
